The year 2023 was such a roller coaster for me, for us and for the farm. This year, I am venturing out into areas unknown. Maybe not totally unknown, but with very little experience, translating to a large learning curve.
My husband was laid off in November 2023. He is eligible for social security, the United States government retired plan each working person is taxed and put into an account the politicians spend on other things. ( Ok, I am not going to get political, I do not like politicians as I believe none of them has ever balanced a bank account themselves. ) So, since November he has been looking for work and doing a lot of work on the sheep farm. Likewise, I have been working more hours to supplement our income.
We have spent time in discussions and came up with an idea we think will help bring more income to our sheep farm – a you tube channel – Granny’s Homestead. Yes, a channel about us raising sheep, goats, gardening and all the other things we do on our little place we call home.
So, we set a date to launch this new adventure. Only it did not go as planned. First, I am using my cell phone to video, not a bad choice, but difficult to find a make shift stand to prop it on in order to video.
Lesson #2 : It is hard to video and work the sheep and goats ( We have three goats, remember my dog Spot ). Yes, there will be some bloopers on the channel. We are real people, we do real things and sometimes things do not work out the way we plan.
Lesson #3 : Putting together a video takes time, time to video, time to edit and time to get it uploaded and approved before the public can view it. We are still working on the video aspect, as the video we have recorded is not even worth editing, it is more like needs to be deleted. Nobody wants to hear sheep baaing while watching the ground go by or the fence. I envision people watching sheep while they are baaing.
Lesson #4 : Never give up. We are not giving up on this new adventure. We truly believe we have knowledge and methods of raising sheep other can learn from. Help others not make the same mistakes we did, and be farther ahead economically than we are after eight years of raising sheep.
The reason to do a you-tube channel. There are many reasons we are wanting to do the you tube channel. One reason is to create another source of income. Reason two is to increase the number of people who know about our Dorper sheep. With more people knowing, more people will look at our sheep with the possibility of purchasing our sheep. Reason three, we are wanting to step out in selling processed Dorper lamb meat. Once again, a bigger potential customer base with more of a social presence.
With any new adventure there needs to be research before jumping into something that may cost you money. There are unexpected events that happen, like the goat not wanting to walk through the opened gate. Somethings can be avoided with proper planning and some you just have to adjust when the event happens. We are learning to plan for the times we video, to have the camera and situation set up so there is more sheep seen and not so much ground.
Launch date: To be announced.
Looking forward to seeing you at my you tube channel in the future.
