Educating Yourself

Our world and the process of gaining information has drastically changed this century. We can use our cell phones as mini computers, to search and gather information on any subject. Being a sheep farmer, I am able to use a cell phone to compare pictures from the internet to what might be wrong with my sheep that is not feeling well. I am also able to take a picture and text it my veterinarian or a consultant at the Ag Office to possible learn what is wrong with my sheep.

As a farmer, I think it is important to not only educate ourselves on the care and raising of our sheep, but to also learn technology to use as a tool.

I am of the Baby Boomer generation. I hear younger generations stereotype us as unable to learn technology and how to use it. Well, this Baby Boomer is using technology to operate her sheep farm and other aspects of my life.

Perhaps the stereotype comes from the fact I and many my age do not have our eyes glued to our cell phone screen. Regardless of what generation you were born in, technology is here and to be connected and get information, a person needs to educate themselves on how to use it.

One social media I have learned to use and is necessary is face book. Although I do not like everyone knowing everything about me, in order to keep up with the registration association and shows, I have to be connected through face book. Show dates, entry forms and show schedules are posted on face book.

Face book has also allowed me to connect with other Dorper Sheep farmers and learn what they are doing that works for their sheep farm. I am also able to look at and discuss bloodlines for possible purchase of rams or ewes and vice versa, sell a few. Auctions are done through digital channels, instead of show up to a location with a trailer, just in case you find a sheep you want to buy. With online auctions a person is able to gain information of bloodlines, see pictures and videos before the animal comes up to auction. And at times I have spoken to the owners to get more detailed information before the date of the auction. All allowing for a more informed decision at the time to bid.

There are many software programs available that will track your expenses, breeding records, sheep health and lambing records, and much more. I have looked into some of these software programs and at this time, the expense is more than the sheep earn, as my flock is small. As my ewe flock approaches 100 head, I will be purchasing and using one of the sheep records software programs. Meanwhile, I am learning about the different programs, talking with those who use them and even talking with representatives on how to use their programs. Educating myself for a decision in the future.

Being informed helps with making any decision concerning being a sheep farmer. Simple everyday decisions need to be made with information. Science research on sheep is changing the information on how to feed and care for sheep. Sheep farmers need to stay informed.

I do not think there will ever be a time when I can say I have learned everything and know everything. Continue to educate yourself in order to make the best decisions in order to be a successful sheep farmer.
